Dhaka, 29 April, Abnews: A nor’wester accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorm swept over the capital on Sunday morning, affecting the normal life, though it was a public holiday, UNB reports.
The seasonal storm hit around 8:30am with a downpour causing waterlogging on many major roads of the capital, including in Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Mirpur, Shewrapara and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar areas.
The gusty wind with thunderstorm was blowing picking a speed of 62 kph while 55mm of rain was recorded around 12:00pm, Abdul Alim, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Metrological Department, told UNB.
However, many city dwellers welcomed the rain as it came after two days of sultry weather, bringing down the mercury level.
Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Mirpur, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Shewarapara, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and many important intersections in the city were inundated following the rain.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 50mm rainfall in the morning until 9:30am.
Officials at the met department said the rain is normal in this time of the year.
Amid the bad weather, the authorities concerned have suspended the plying of launches and steamers from Sadarghat Launch Terminal until further notice.
Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind with lightning flashes is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna & Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Barisal & Chittagong divisions with hails at isolated places over the country.
