Dhaka, 16 March, Abnews: Dhaka University (DU) students on Thursday staged demonstrations on the campus against the demand of Home Economics College students to declare the college as a DU institute.
Around 500 students gathered in front of the residence of DU Vice-chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique in the morning.
Later, they formed a human chain from the VC Chattar to Nilkhet intersection from 11:00am to 12:30pm. Some banners demanded scrapping all ties with Home Economics College.
Proctor of DU A M Amzad Ali said, university authorities have already decided that affiliated institutions will not be allowed to use the DU logo in issuing certificates and other purposes.
The agitating Dhaka University students presented a five-point charter:
-Bar on using DU logo and name by affiliate institutions
-Separate convocation for DU students
-Bar on affiliate bodies to use DU logo and monogram on certificates
-Separate policy for affiliated institutions
Rakib Haider, one of organizers, said that girls of Home Economics College (HEC) everyday making gridlock and their demand is absolutely illogical, so we don't support them. Ouruniversity administration must to cancel Home Economics College from under of DU.
The DU proctor assured the students of meeting their demands.The students however gave an ultimatum until Monday to this end, otherwise they warned of going on a strike.
Students of of Home Economics College on Monday (March 13) blocked Nilkhet intersection with the goal of achieving their demand to recognize the college as an institute of Dhaka University and have continued their protest since then.
The Home Economics College students made an eight-point demand, including the recognition of the college as an institute of Dhaka University.
Students allege negligence by the authorities and teachers in the college, and said such problems would be gone if they were brought under DU.
The students’ other demands include ensuring its autonomy, providing transport and library facilities, ensuring quality education, resolving accommodation problems and appointing adequate number of teachers.
