Dhaka, 22 Jan, Abnews: Bangladesh Nationalist Party has extended support for the half-day strike for Sundarban called by anti-coal activists, BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed said on Sunday.
The strike called by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports for January 26 demands cancellation of the Rampal coal-fired power plant near Sundarban.
BNP spokesperson Mr. Rizvi announced his party's support to the strike at a press conference at Nayapaltan party office in Dhaka.
While the global and local environmental activists contend that the location of the proposed 1320 megawatt plant, 14 kilometers from the Sundarban, threatens the ecological balance of the world's largest mangrove forest.
